Portugieser

ntroduced: 1939 (modern relaunch in 1993)

Purpose / Inspiration: The Portugieser was born when two Portuguese businessmen asked IWC to build a marine chronometer wristwatch—with pocket watch-level accuracy. The result? A massive-for-its-time 43mm wristwatch with clean, open dials and precision-focused movements. It’s become IWC’s flagship dress chronometer, balancing classical design with modern size and mechanical muscle.

Designer: Original concept based on IWC pocket watch calibers from the 1930s; modern design language refined by IWC in the early 1990s to resurrect its legacy

Case size:

  • Vintage: 42–43mm (massive for the 1930s)
  • Modern: 40.4mm (Automatic), 42mm–44mm (Chrono and Annual Calendar), 45mm (Perpetual Calendar)

Case options:

  • Stainless steel
  • 18k red or white gold
  • Platinum (limited editions)

Powered by:

  • Modern calibers include:
    • Caliber 82200 / 52010 / 69355 (IWC in-house automatic and chronograph)
    • Caliber 52610 / 52850 (7-day automatic with complications)
    • Caliber 51950 (Perpetual Calendar)
  • Early quartz and ETA-based references exist, but most modern pieces are fully in-house

Bezel: Ultra-thin polished bezel to maximize dial real estate

Dial options:

  • Silver, white, black, blue, green
  • Applied Arabic numerals, railroad-style minute track
  • Leaf hands and subdials at 6 & 12 (or 3 & 9 for chrono)
  • Some with moonphase, power reserve, or calendar arcs

Water resistance: 30m–60m depending on model

Bracelet:

  • Alligator leather strap (Santoni often used)
  • Folding clasp standard
  • Rubber and steel bracelets available on select models

Still in production, the most complete family in IWC’s catalog—ranging from time-only to perpetual calendar tourbillons

Why it matters: The Portugieser isn’t just a dress watch—it’s a legacy piece. One of the first large wristwatches, a platform for serious complications, and the face of IWC’s high horology. It’s clean, serious, and still manages to stand out in a sea of small-dialed suits.
