Milgauss

Introduced: 1956 (Ref. 6541)

Purpose / Inspiration:
Rolex designed the Milgauss for scientists and engineers working in high-magnetic-field environments, like those at CERN in Geneva. Magnetic fields can wreak havoc on mechanical movements, so Rolex crafted a watch that could resist up to 1,000 gauss (hence “Mil-gauss”). It wasn’t about glamour—it was about safeguarding precision in the face of invisible forces.

Designer:
An entirely in-house creation from Rolex’s technical laboratories, the Milgauss was engineered by the same minds behind the Oyster case and Perpetual rotor. Their breakthrough—a soft-iron inner cage to shield the movement—was pure function, married to a sporty, modern aesthetic.

Case size:

  • Classic: 38 mm (Ref. 6541 & Ref. 1019)
  • Other sizes:
    • 40 mm (current Ref. 116400 & Ref. 126400)
  • Slim mid-century profile originally, with a slightly thicker case in modern editions to accommodate updated shielding
  • Smooth, polished bezel

Case options:

  • Oystersteel (904L stainless steel—high corrosion resistance)
  • Brushed top surfaces, polished sides
  • Soft-iron Faraday cage inside case middle for magnetic protection
  • Twinlock screw-down crown
  • Solid caseback (no exhibition back, to maintain shielding)
  • 100 m water resistance

    • Caliber 1580 (in early Ref. 1019)
    • Caliber 3131 (Ref. 116400 & 116400GV)
    • Caliber 3230 (current Ref. 126400)
  • Power reserve: ~48 hours (3131), ~70 hours (3230)
  • Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers for additional resilience
  • COSC-certified chronometer, then Superlative Chronometer (±2 sec/day)

Bezel:

  • Fixed, smooth-polished steel
  • Unadorned to maintain a clean, scientific look
  • Same simple profile across all references

Dial options:

  • Black dial (standard)
  • Z-blue dial (electric blue sunburst, on GV “Glace Verte”)
  • White dial (ref. 116400)
  • Lightning-bolt second hand in bright orange or yellow
  • Applied hour markers filled with Chromalight lume
  • Orange “MILGAUSS” text on dial (on modern refs)
  • Green-tinted sapphire crystal (unique to GV models)

Water resistance:

  • 100 m
  • Equally at home in the lab or by the pool
  • Twinlock crown ensures tight sealing

Bracelet:

  • Oyster bracelet—flat three-piece links, fully brushed
  • Oysterlock clasp with Easylink 5 mm comfort extension
  • Solid end links for robust, secure fit

Still in production, now exclusively in a 40 mm case. The GV (Glace Verte) with its green-tinted crystal and blue dial has become the modern icon, but purists still prize the clean-dial steel versions.

Why it matters:
The Milgauss isn’t about bling—it’s about brains. It proved that Rolex could solve a real-world engineering problem without sacrificing style. Today, it stands out as the only true “scientist’s Rolex,” mixing laboratory-grade shielding with bold design flourishes like the lightning hand and green crystal.
