Limelight

Introduced: 2000

Purpose / Inspiration:
Born at the turn of the millennium, the Limelight collection was Piaget’s celebration of show-stopping glamour. While the Altiplano proved Piaget’s mastery of thinness, Limelight showcased its jewel-setting prowess. Inspired by the sparkle of a theater’s marquee and the radiance of red-carpet moments, each Limelight watch is designed to catch every glance—part timepiece, part high-jewelry creation.

Designer:
Conceived by Piaget’s in-house High Jewellery atelier under Thierry Nataf’s direction, the Limelight line brings together gemologists, gem-setters, and watchmakers. Their collaborative vision: fuse haute joaillerie with horological savoir-faire, turning cases and dials into precious canvases.

Case size:

  • Classic: 32 mm (Limelight Gala) and 36 mm (Limelight Diamonds)
  • Other sizes:
    • 26 mm (ladies’ petite, often fully gem-set)
    • 38 mm–40 mm (Limelight Precious models with complications)
  • Distinctive asymmetrical lugs on Gala models—two sweeping “half-moon” extensions that cradle the diamond-set bezel
  • Slim profile (7–9 mm thick) to keep focus on the gems

Case options:

  • 18 k rose gold
  • 18 k white gold
  • Platinum (rare high-jewelry editions)
  • Pavé-set diamonds on bezel, lugs, and sometimes dial flange (ranging 0.5 to 10+ cts)
  • Colored gemstones: sapphires, emeralds, rubies in gradient “rainbow” or uniform settings
  • Sapphire crystal front and back on automatic/complication pieces

Powered by:

  • Quartz movements (ultra-slim, precision-oriented for pure jewelry models)
  • Automatic in-house calibers on complication versions:
    • Caliber 1110P (small seconds)
    • Caliber 690P (date)
    • Caliber 1350P (moonphase)
  • Power reserve (automatic): ~42 hours
  • Finishing: perlage on bridges, sunburst rotor where visible

Bezel:

  • Fully fixed, lavishly set with brilliant-cut diamonds or colored gems
  • On Gala, the bezel extends into its “ears,” following the asymmetrical lug design
  • Mirror-polished gold visible between stones for maximum contrast

Dial options:

  • Mother-of-pearl (natural hues or tinted)
  • Guilloché dials with gem-set indices
  • Full pavé diamond dials (in select high-jewelry editions)
  • Minimalist baton hands or leaf-shaped hands in matching metal
  • No date window on pure jewelry models; small seconds or moonphase subdial on complications

Water resistance:

  • 30 m (splash-proof)
  • Not intended for aquatic wear—focus is on elegance, not sport

Bracelet / Strap:

  • Alligator leather (black, white, pastel shades) with pin-buckle
  • Milanese mesh in matching gold—often flush-set with tiny diamonds at clasp
  • Interchangeable quick-release straps on select modern pieces

Production status:
An active flagship of Piaget’s High Jewellery watch portfolio. Regularly refreshed with new gem-setting motifs—floral garlands, cosmic bursts, graphic Art Deco patterns—yet always under the Limelight banner.

Why it matters:
Limelight isn’t about understatement; it’s about commanding attention with the union of horology and haute joaillerie. Each model is a testament to Piaget’s dual expertise: cutting-edge gem-setting and refined watchmaking. For those who see a watch as both an instrument of time and a piece of wearable art, the Limelight is where sparkle meets precision.
