GST

Introduced: 1997

Purpose / Inspiration: The GST Collection—short for Gold, Steel, Titanium—was IWC’s response to the luxury sports watch trend of the late ‘90s. It took tool-watch performance and dressed it in integrated-case armor. Big, bold, and minimalist, these watches blended Germanic design with Swiss engineering. The GST line laid the groundwork for the modern Aquatimer and Ingenieur that followed.

Designer: Created under IWC’s technical director Günter Blümlein, designed as a functional, high-end sports collection to compete with AP Royal Oak Offshore and Omega Seamaster Pro

Case size:

  • GST Chronograph: 39mm–42mm
  • GST Perpetual Calendar: 43mm
  • GST Deep One: 42mm (first mechanical depth gauge from IWC)

Case options:

  • Stainless steel
  • Titanium (rare in-house use at the time)
  • 18k yellow gold
  • Integrated case + bracelet design (early Genta-like influence, IWC’s own execution)

Powered by:

  • IWC Caliber 7922 (ETA/Valjoux 7750 base in chrono models)
  • Caliber 79261 with perpetual calendar module by Kurt Klaus
  • Caliber 8914 in the Deep One (mechanical depth gauge system)

Bezel:

  • Fixed or rotating (GST Aquatimer)
  • Smooth or brushed finish
  • Deep One featured inner rotating dive bezel via secondary crown

Dial options:

  • Clean, legible layouts
  • Black, silver, blue, or gold-tone dials
  • Applied hour markers, no-nonsense tool aesthetic

Water resistance: 120m–200m (depending on model); Deep One rated to 100m but with mechanical depth readout

Bracelet:

  • Integrated solid-link bracelet in steel, gold, or titanium
  • Pin-adjustable links (no screws in early models)
  • Matte, industrial finish with folding clasp

Discontinued in the mid-2000s; elements live on in the modern Aquatimer and Ingenieur lines

Why it matters: The GST Collection was a clean break from IWC’s pilot/dress roots. It proved they could build brutally functional luxury sports watches with in-house expertise. Understated, underrated—and now quietly collected.

GST = Gold. Steel. Titanium. And all business

No Flash, All Function: A true 2000s-era tool watch before “tool” was cool

From Depth Gauges to Perpetuals: The range went deep—literally

IWC Muscle, Integrated Style: A sleeper line that aged well
