Purpose / Inspiration: The Grande Complication was IWC’s declaration that it could do everything. It wasn’t just another dress watch—it was a showcase of traditional watchmaking’s most difficult feats: minute repeater, perpetual calendar, chronograph, and moonphase. At the time, only a handful of watchmakers could build a grand complication. IWC’s version? Big, bold, and surprisingly wearable.
Designer: Conceived by IWC master watchmaker Kurt Klaus, alongside a team of engineers during the brand’s technical renaissance in the late ’80s and early ’90s

Why it matters: IWC is often known for pilot watches and engineers’ tools—but the Grande Complication proves they can build with the best of Geneva’s elite. It’s old-school complication with a Schaffhausen twist: larger, bolder, and more technical in look and feel.
