Yacht-Master

Introduced: 1992 — Rolex’s take on the luxury nautical lifestyle, blending sport and status

Purpose / Inspiration:
The Yacht-Master was never built to conquer the ocean floor like the Submariner—it was made for the deck. Inspired by Rolex’s deep ties with yachting culture, it offered a refined take on the classic dive watch formula. Think marina, not mission. It kept the waterproof case and rotating bezel, but swapped utilitarian looks for luxury touches. A sport watch in appearance, but a luxury piece at heart—polished, plush, and perfectly at home on a wrist holding a champagne flute.

Designer:
Developed internally by Rolex as a new luxury sports line, loosely echoing the Submariner silhouette but with softer lines and upscale materials

Case size:

  • Classic: 40mm (Yacht-Master)
  • Other sizes: 37mm, 42mm
  • Oyster case with more rounded lugs and broader bezel
  • Wears slimmer and dressier than the Submariner

Case options:

  • Rolesium (steel with platinum bezel – Yacht-Master signature)
  • Everose gold (Rolex’s proprietary rose gold)
  • Oystersteel (904L)
  • White gold (on 42mm version)
  • Some references feature matte Cerachrom bezel (especially 42mm)
  • Sapphire crystal with cyclops over date
  • Screw-down crown with Triplock sealing system

Powered by:

  • Caliber 3135 (40mm pre-2019)
  • Caliber 2236 (37mm with Syloxi silicon hairspring)
  • Caliber 3235 (40mm post-2019 and 42mm)
  • All automatic, COSC and Rolex Superlative certified
  • 48–70 hour power reserve depending on reference
  • Smooth seconds sweep, quickset date, hacking

Bezel:

  • Bidirectional 60-minute timing bezel (vs unidirectional in dive models)
  • Precious metal insert: solid platinum or Cerachrom ceramic
  • Polished raised numerals on matte background—shiny, tactile, upscale

Dial options:

  • Sunburst dials in blue, rhodium, slate, and champagne tones
  • Maxi markers with Chromalight lume (bright blue glow)
  • Mercedes hands with a touch of elegance
  • Red “Yacht-Master” text on some references for sporty flair

Water resistance:

  • 100m across all versions
  • Built for boating, not diving
  • Plenty for yachting, poolside, and rain—it’s still a Rolex Oyster case

Bracelet:

  • Oyster bracelet with polished center links (more dressy)
  • Oysterflex (rubber strap with metal blade core) on Everose and 42mm models
  • Glidelock or Easylink adjustment systems depending on model
  • Solid, comfortable, and built for active luxury

Still in production, the Yacht-Master is Rolex’s nod to leisure—where performance meets polish, and utility meets elegance.

Why it matters:
The Yacht-Master isn’t trying to be a Submariner. It’s smoother, flashier, and far less common. It’s for people who like their tools with a little luxury baked in. If the Sub is the diver’s watch, the Yacht-Master is the watch for the captain on deck. It wears lighter, shines brighter, and flies under the radar—unless you know what to look for. It’s sporty, but it’s no tool watch. It’s a flex. Just a very tasteful one.
