Star Wheel

Introduced: 1991

Purpose / Inspiration: Created to revive an ancient wandering hours complication—originally used in 17th-century Italian night clocks for legibility in the dark. AP reimagined it for the modern collector with an artistic, almost astronomical visual display. It’s time told in orbit—no hands, no dial clutter.

Designer: Developed in-house by AP’s complications team. No singular named designer, but heavily driven by the brand’s innovation-first mindset in the early ’90s.

Materials & Features: Uses three transparent sapphire discs mounted on a rotating central carousel, each with hour numerals that “wander” across a 120° arc of minutes. Housed in precious metal round cases—mostly yellow gold, white gold, or platinum. Later modern versions include the 2022 Code 11.59 Starwheel reissue with a futuristic twist.

Discontinuation Status: Original run discontinued in early 2000s. Brought back in 2022 under the Code 11.59 line with a modern openworked aesthetic.

Mechanical Poetry: It doesn’t just tell time—it dances with it.

Visual Theater: A hypnotic display that moves like a constellation on your wrist.

For the Dreamer: You don’t buy a Star Wheel to flex—you buy it to feel.

Reborn Legend: A cult complication from the ’90s brought back with 21st-century swagger.
