Introduced: 1993 (modern line) — originally inspired by early 1900s Patek “Chronometro Gondolo” pocket watches for Brazilian retailer Gondolo & Labouriau
Purpose / Inspiration:
The Gondolo was built as a tribute to Patek Philippe’s Art Deco heritage. It’s not round, not sporty, and not mainstream. Instead, it’s a deliberate nod to a time when elegance meant straight lines, symmetry, and bold case shapes. Think early 20th-century pocket watch meets modern wrist sophistication. It’s for the collector who doesn’t want the usual—and doesn’t need to explain why.
Designer:
Based on original Gondolo pocket watches sold in Brazil (1902–1930) and reinterpreted in the ‘90s by Patek’s in-house team to revive the Art Deco aesthetic in wristwatch form.
Case size:
- Varies greatly—Gondolo isn’t one shape:
- Rectangular: ~32mm x 43mm
- Tonneau (barrel): ~34mm x 44mm
- Square or cushion: 28mm–40mm
- Case shapes include: rectangular, tonneau, cushion, and TV-screen
- Slim and curved to sit flat on the wrist—designed more like jewelry than tool
Case options:
- Rose gold
- White gold
- Yellow gold (vintage)
- Platinum (rare, high complications)
- Brushed and polished accents
- Sapphire crystal, with display or solid casebacks depending on the reference
Powered by:
- Manual-wind and automatic in-house movements:
- Caliber 215 – manual, small seconds
- Caliber 25-21 REC – manual, rectangular caliber for shaped cases
- Caliber 240 – automatic micro-rotor on some versions
- Most feature Geneva Seal or Patek Seal finishing
- Power reserve: ~44 hours depending on movement
Bezel:
- Thin, polished bezels—sometimes stepped or fluted depending on model
- Some feature diamond-set bezels (in ladies’ or limited models)
- Designed to frame the case shape without overpowering it
Dial options:
- Silver, ivory, opaline, black, or champagne
- Guilloché engraving, Breguet numerals, or baton markers
- Railroad-style minute tracks or deco patterns on some models
- Small seconds at 6 o’clock common in manual references
- Some include date or dual time (rare)
- No lume—pure dress watch design
Water resistance:
- 30m
- Not made for water—this is formalwear for the wrist
Bracelet:
- Shiny alligator leather strap (black, brown, or navy)
- Gold pin buckle or deployant clasp with Calatrava cross
- No bracelet version—it’s not that kind of watch
Still in production, but quietly. The Gondolo is a niche within a niche—made for collectors who appreciate classical design, historical references, and shaped cases. If the Calatrava is the tuxedo, the Gondolo is the vintage three-piece suit with real personality.
Why it matters:
The Gondolo isn’t a status symbol—it’s a signal. It says you know your history, and you care more about lineage and craft than clicks and hype. You won’t see one on every wrist—and that’s the point.
No Circle. No Trend. Just Pure Deco DNA.
