Golden Ellipse

Introduced: 1968

Purpose / Inspiration:
The Golden Ellipse is Patek Philippe’s most avant-garde dress watch—born from mathematics, not fashion. Its proportions follow the golden ratio (1:1.618), a formula used in art, nature, and architecture to achieve visual harmony. Instead of a round or square case, it’s elliptical—equal parts radical and refined. It was designed to stand out by doing less, making it one of the boldest quiet statements in watchmaking.

Designer:
Crafted in-house by Patek Philippe’s design team, inspired by classical architecture and the golden mean used by Da Vinci and Le Corbusier. The shape was a deliberate departure from traditional round or rectangular cases.

Case size:

  • Classic: 34.5mm x 39.5mm (Ref. 5738)
  • Other sizes: Vintage references as small as 31mm, some over 40mm
  • Ultra-thin elliptical case—more elegant than round, more wearable than square
  • Curved case hugs the wrist; wears slimmer than size suggests

Case options:

  • Rose gold
  • Yellow gold
  • White gold
  • Platinum (on special references)
  • Brushed or polished surfaces depending on model
  • Sapphire crystal, exhibition or solid caseback
  • Extremely slim (around 6mm thick in some models)

Powered by:

  • Automatic in-house micro-rotor movements:
    • Caliber 240 – ultra-thin, high-end finishing, Geneva Seal or Patek Seal
  • ~48-hour power reserve
  • Gold micro-rotor allows the movement to be slim and beautifully decorated
  • No complications—time-only, with rare exception

Bezel:

  • Smooth, narrow polished bezel
  • Meant to disappear into the case—it’s about the ellipse, not the frame

Dial options:

  • Iconic sunburst blue dial (Ref. 5738R and 5738P)
  • Also available in black, gray, silver, or gold
  • No numerals—simple baton markers or none at all
  • No seconds hand—time-only display for pure elegance
  • Applied gold hands and indices

Water resistance:

  • 30m
  • It’s a dress watch—not meant for swimming, diving, or weekend roughhousing

Bracelet:

  • Shiny or matte alligator leather strap
  • Matching gold pin buckle with Calatrava cross
  • Some vintage references came with integrated mesh gold bracelets—very ‘70s
  • Always slim, always formal

Still in production, the Golden Ellipse remains one of the most distinctive watches in Patek’s catalog. It’s not trendy. It’s not mainstream. And that’s the point. It was made for a different type of collector—the one who values timeless proportion more than fleeting hype.

Why it matters:
This isn’t a watch you buy to impress anyone. It’s a watch you wear because you understand balance, symmetry, and restraint. The Golden Ellipse doesn’t try to be iconic—it just is. Quiet luxury for the guy who already gets it.

No Seconds. No Complications. No Apologies.
