Big Pilot

Introduced: 2002 (modern version), based on a 1940 Luftwaffe B-Uhr model

Purpose / Inspiration: The Big Pilot is a modern reboot of IWC’s WWII-era aviation watches, built for maximum legibility, power reserve, and wrist presence. Originally worn over flight jackets, its oversized crown and clean dial were made for cockpit conditions. The modern version kept the military roots but upgraded everything—movement, case, materials—for luxury tool-watch buyers.

Designer: Based on the original 1940 IWC Type B-Uhr design; modern version reinterpreted and relaunched under creative direction at IWC’s Schaffhausen manufacture in 2002

Why it matters: The Big Pilot is the icon of modern IWC. It’s not just about size—it’s about purpose-built design, with a legacy that ties back to real aviation history. It’s serious, functional, and instantly recognizable from across the room.
