Introduced: As a modern collection in 2018 under the name Aviator 8, but rooted in earlier pilot’s chronographs from the 1930s–1950s—especially the Breitling Huit Aviation Department watches.
Purpose / Inspiration: Designed to revive Breitling’s pre-Navitimer pilot heritage, the Aviator aimed for clean dials, vintage-style cases, and cockpit-ready readability. It’s Breitling’s nod to the Golden Age of aviation, before slide rules took over.
Designer: Concept spearheaded by Georges Kern, shortly after he became CEO. Inspired by military aviation watches from Breitling’s archives—especially the WWII-era pilot chronos.
Materials & Features:
- Case sizes range from 41mm to 43mm, often in steel or DLC-coated finishes.
- Available in three-hand, day-date, chronograph, and GMT variants.
- Powered by in-house B01 chronograph calibers or COSC-certified automatic movements.
- Design highlights include bold Arabic numerals, onion-style crowns, and bi-directional bezels—evoking cockpit instruments.
Discontinuation Status: Partially phased out—some models rebranded under Classic AVI or merged into other vintage-inspired lines. Still seen occasionally in limited editions and boutiques.
