Introduced: Late 1990s (approx. 1997–1999)
Purpose / Inspiration: Built as a sleeker, modern evolution of Breitling’s military-leaning chronographs, the Shadow Flyback was designed to offer instant-reset timing functionality—ideal for pilots or tactical users who needed to time back-to-back events with precision and speed. It was a more compact, tech-forward sibling to larger tool watches of the time.
Designer: Developed during the Ernest Schneider era, as part of the push to modernize the Windrider line with technical features and more wearable dimensions.
40mm case in stainless steel or titanium, often with a rubber bezel insert for a stealth look
Powered by Breitling Caliber 38 — based on Lemania 5100, featuring:
▪️ Flyback chronograph (instant reset/restart with one push)
▪️ 12-hour chronograph, central minutes, and sub-seconds
▪️ Day/date complication
Matched with rubber straps or Pilot bracelets
Dials typically matte black or slate, with minimal branding and military-inspired layout
Water resistance: approx. 100m, sapphire crystal
Discontinued in the early 2000s
Never replaced directly—Breitling moved away from Lemania-based flybacks, making this model one of the last of its kind in the catalog.
Now a sleeper hit among collectors for its compact size, rare movement, and tool-first design.
Flyback Function = Fast Focus: Reset and restart timing instantly. No pause.
Compact But Combat-Ready: 40mm of pure mission-built control.
Powered by Lemania: One of the great chronograph engines—now extinct in modern Breitling.
Quietly Tactical: No bling. No shout. Just all-business capability.
