Introduced: 1972
Purpose / Inspiration: Launched as the first luxury sports watch in stainless steel. It was created to save the brand during the Quartz Crisis by doing something no one else dared: combine fine watchmaking with a rugged, industrial design. The name “Royal Oak” came from British naval warships, and the bezel shape was inspired by a diver’s helmet.
Designer: Gérald Genta—the most legendary watch designer of the 20th century. He sketched the design overnight after AP called him with a crisis-level challenge.
Materials & Features: Originally launched in stainless steel (ref. 5402ST), it featured an octagonal bezel with exposed screws, an integrated bracelet, and the now-iconic “Tapisserie” guilloché dial. Powered by the ultra-thin Caliber 2121.
Discontinuation Status: Never discontinued. Still in full production with many variations: chronographs, tourbillons, openworked versions, and precious metal editions. It’s the backbone of AP’s brand identity.
The Original Rulebreaker: Took steel, gave it prestige pricing, and rewrote luxury.
Instantly Recognizable: That octagon? Those screws? It doesn’t whisper—it owns the room.
Designer Watch Royalty: Born from Genta’s genius. The blueprint for every luxury sports watch since.
Survivor Story: The watch that rescued AP from the brink and created an empire.
