Panthère

Introduced: 1983

Purpose / Inspiration: The Panthère was created as the ultimate jewelry-watch hybrid—a timepiece that wore like a bracelet and shimmered like Cartier’s iconic feline. Named after the Maison’s longtime panther motif, it embodied elegance, sensuality, and status. It wasn’t about telling time—it was about showing presence.

Designer: Designed under the direction of Alain-Dominique Perrin during Cartier’s expansion into high fashion and luxury lifestyle in the 1980s

Case size: Available in mini (~22mm), small (~27mm), medium (~29mm), and large (~32mm) square cases

Case options: 18k yellow gold, stainless steel, rose gold, two-tone, full pavé diamond versions, and high jewelry editions with panther-themed embellishments

Powered by Cartier quartz movement (ETA-based)

Bezel: Smooth square bezel with rounded corners—classic and compact

Dial options: Silvered with Roman numerals, railroad minute track, and blued sword hands; some jewelry models with diamond pavé or lacquer accents

Water resistance: 30m

Bracelet: Signature five-link brick-lay bracelet—fluid, flexible, and designed to drape like fine jewelry

Discontinued in early 2000s, then relaunched in 2017 due to popular demand

Still in production – a core part of Cartier’s women’s watch lineup

Why it matters: The Panthère isn’t just a watch—it’s a fashion icon. It became a staple of the 1980s jet set, and its return proves its style never left.

Wrist Candy with a Clock: Designed to feel like a bracelet, not a tool

Five Links of Fluid Gold: The Panthère’s bracelet flows like silk

Quartz for a Reason: So you never have to think—just wear and shine

Cartier’s Most Elegant Animal: Named for the house’s most enduring muse
