Introduced: 1993 (civilian debut) — originally developed in the 1950s for the Italian Navy
Purpose / Inspiration: The Luminor was built as a military dive tool, named after Panerai’s tritium-based luminous compound that followed their earlier “Radiomir” paint. Its standout feature—the crown-protecting bridge—was engineered to improve water resistance under combat conditions. Once a classified military instrument, it became an icon in the ‘90s luxury watch boom, worn by Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and collectors who wanted big, bold, and different.
Designer: Based on Italian Navy prototypes from the 1950s and ‘60s—modernized by Guido Panerai e Figlio and later refined under the Vendôme Group (now Richemont) for public release
