Aquanaut

Introduced: 1997

Purpose / Inspiration:
The Aquanaut was born during a time when luxury needed to look less stuffy. Patek built it for a younger, sportier crowd that didn’t want to baby their watches. It followed the Nautilus but stripped away the complexity. Rounded octagonal bezel, tropical rubber strap, and a grid-textured dial—this was Patek’s quiet rebellion. Still high horology, still Swiss prestige, but with sneakers on instead of dress shoes.

Designer:
Inspired by the original Gerald Genta-designed Nautilus but reimagined in-house by Patek Philippe’s design team as a more casual and accessible alternative

Case size:

  • Classic: 40mm (Ref. 5167A)
  • Other sizes: 38.8mm (Ref. 5165A), 42.2mm (Ref. 5168G), 36mm (ladies)
  • Rounded octagon case—cleaner than Nautilus, still sporty
  • Slim profile, curved lugs—wears tighter and more discreet than specs suggest

Case options:

  • Stainless steel
  • White gold (especially in 5168G and complicated variants)
  • Rose gold (on select chronograph and dual-time models)
  • Sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, exhibition caseback
  • Brushed and polished surfaces for sporty-elegant contrast

Powered by:

  • Automatic in-house movements:
    • Caliber 324 S C – used in the 5167A, known for reliability and slimness
    • Caliber 26‑330 S C – newer generation with hacking seconds
    • Complications: dual time (324 S C FUS), chronograph (CH 28‑520 C)
  • ~35-45 hours of power reserve depending on movement
  • Gold rotor, Geneva Seal finishing—very few do it cleaner

Bezel:

  • Brushed with polished edges
  • Rounded octagonal shape—Nautilus DNA, simplified
  • Fixed bezel—pure design, not a tool

Dial options:

  • Embossed “grenade” pattern dial—signature texture
  • Colors: black (looks charcoal grey), khaki green, blue (on gold models)
  • Luminous white-gold applied numerals
  • Date window at 3 o’clock
  • Simple 3-hand layout or subdials (in chrono/dual-time models)

Water resistance:

  • 120m
  • Screw-down crown
  • Rugged enough to swim with, refined enough for a boardroom

Bracelet:

  • Composite rubber strap—called the “Tropical Strap”
    • Resistant to UV rays, saltwater, and bacteria
    • Molded to match dial’s texture
  • Steel deployant clasp with Calatrava cross
  • No integrated steel bracelet on the standard Aquanaut (unlike Nautilus)

Still in production, and arguably more sought-after than the Nautilus for new buyers, the Aquanaut is a trophy watch that doesn’t scream. It’s casual, but it’s not careless. You can wear it to lunch or the lakehouse—it fits wherever you do.

Why it matters:
The Aquanaut is the watch people say they want after they’ve already made money. It’s not flashy. It’s not oversized. It’s for someone who already proved themselves and doesn’t need to explain. It’s a $30K watch that wears like a $5K watch to anyone not in the know—and that’s the appeal.
